A Typical Week: Tuesday

It's Tuesday!  We start early today...

And this is how we feel about it.
Tuesday
8:00am - 8:58am English Bible Study/Discussion Group with Hannam University Staff
This is a fun group of staff from the university that have varying English proficiencies, but nonetheless get up extra early to come together for discussion and fellowship.  It's led by Pastor (Choi ("Chey")) which is great because for once, it's not led by us YAVs so we can just enjoy attending!  Also, he's more aware of the issues that are important to Korean Christians, and so each week he chooses an article to read and a Bible passage that applies to it.  It's really interesting to learn what these issues are, and what our Korean friends think about them.

That sign says the name of the guy
on the left, Julio Sanchez.  He's from
Columbia, as is the hat Zhao Yin,
who's from China, is wearing.
9:00am - 1:00pm Korean Language Class
Today it's Reading & Pronunciation followed by Listening & Speaking.

1:00pm - 7:00pm Free Afternoon
Sounds great!  I usually fill this time preparing for the evening's lesson, which is next up.  Also it's a good time to catch a nap, go grocery shopping, do some house cleaning, and to plan lessons for Wednesday.  This whole afternoon feels like it's about two hours long.

7:00pm - 8:00pm English Conversation Group
This meeting with a group of Hannam Mechanical Engineering students has become one of my favorite times of the week.  The very first lesson was really really bad, I went in thinking we'd just introduce ourselves and have a quick chat about our interests.  Little did I know how little they know of English.  But now we've shifted to games that focus on learning how native speakers talk to each other, and I'm working on a new project where we'll build something together (they're ME majors, after all) while communicating in English.  I hope this will keep them interested while practicing a situation that could actually require them to use English in their real lives.

These guys are great, but they do really define the blank stare that all
teachers dread sometimes.  Then it's time to speak  s l o w l y.
8:00pm - 12:00am Rest/Study/Do homework/Plan for tomorrow/Process the day
One thing I haven't mentioned about this time is that we K-YAVs spend a lot of time talking through how our day went, which is really valuable.  If you don't know, we all live in the same house, and it's really a helpful community of three friends to talk, study, cook, eat, and joke with!
Yeah, we're pretty cool.

On to Wednesday tomorrow!  (Spoiler: it's a lot like Monday)  Thanks for reading!

  1. So glad to see that the K-YAVs have found some good traditional (if not a bit over-starched) Korean Clothing!

    1. Yeah, I think maybe I shouldn't have starched the sword, though...
